Mary Astell Academy is an alternative provision academy established in September 2018. Based in the West End of Newcastle, the academy works with young people aged 11 to 16 who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education, as well as those at risk of permanent exclusion who require early, targeted intervention.

We work in close partnership with local and neighbouring schools and local authorities to provide proactive, supportive placements for pupils at risk of permanent exclusion, with the aim of re‑engaging learners and preventing exclusion wherever possible.

In addition, Mary Astell Academy is the named educational provision for a small number of pupils with an EHCP, ensuring their individual needs are met within a highly supportive and specialist setting.

We provide access to a full-time, broad and balanced curriculum that is tailored to pupils’ individual strengths, needs and potential. Where appropriate, we support pupils to reintegrate successfully into mainstream education or transition to the most suitable next stage of learning.

Our young people are also able to access a wide range of therapeutic interventions to support them in recognising and understanding triggers for their behaviours and develop strategies that support them in dealing with these. We recognise that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and trauma have often had a significant impact on the lives of our pupils. Many have demonstrated great resilience and strength in the face of these challenges.
