Your Role

Burnley High School wishes to appoint a hardworking, enthusiastic and dedicated Head of Year to take responsibility for the pastoral care, behaviour, attendance and welfare of pupils across two year groups. This is a vital role in ensuring that every pupil is supported to achieve their full potential and that high expectations are maintained across the school.

 

If you are passionate about working with young people, experienced in managing behaviour, committed to safeguarding, and have a flexible, resilient, ‘can do’ attitude, we would welcome an application from you. This position is term time only working 39 weeks per year and full time. The pro rata salary is £28,197 to £31,981 per annum.


The Job

  • Lead the pastoral support for two year groups, promoting inclusion, resilience and high expectations.
  • Take responsibility for behaviour management, attendance and punctuality, using data to monitor progress and implement interventions.
  • Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) to identify and respond to safeguarding concerns, attending meetings and ensuring records are kept accurately.
  • Train and operate as a DSL
  • Act as the main point of contact for pupils, parents and staff regarding pastoral issues.
  • Support reintegration of pupils following exclusion, absence or alternative provision.
  • Build strong relationships with families and external agencies to support pupil wellbeing and progress.
  • Lead assemblies, rewards, and year group events, celebrating achievements.
  • Provide rare and occasional cover for lessons when required, in line with school policy.
  • Contribute to the wider school community, supporting a positive culture of care, inclusion and ambition.


What are the job requirements?

  • GCSE or equivalent qualification in English and Mathematics (grade 9–5).
  • Relevant qualification in education, child development or pastoral work (desirable).
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding procedures and experience of working with DSLs.
  • Experience of using positive behaviour management strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with pupils, parents, staff and external agencies.
  • Strong organisational skills, including use of ICT and data systems.
  • Experience of working with young people in a pastoral, mentoring or behaviour role.
