Role overview

Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that Red Balloon Educational Trust (RBET) achieves its core purpose. They oversee the overall management and administration of the charity ensuring that RBET achieves its mission to provide tailored education, wellbeing and social integration to young people unable to attend mainstream school. 

Their principal role is to make strategic educational decisions in line with the vision, mission and values of the charity. Together with the other trustees they oversee the senior staff’s management and administration of the charity, ensuring legal, financial, educational and safeguarding compliance. The Board of Trustees has a collective responsibility, meaning that it always acts as a group and not as individuals.

What we are looking for

We are seeking a Trustee with a strong background in education, ideally within a school‑based context, to complement the skills, experience, and expertise of our existing Board. This role will play a key part in ensuring that the Trust continues to meet its responsibilities and that both students and staff are well supported and cared for.

The successful candidate’s professional experience and educational values will align closely with Red Balloon’s educational philosophy and practice. They will understand and uphold the Trust’s core principles, ensuring that Red Balloon’s educational provision remains responsive to the evolving nature of modern education and to the complex needs of our learners.

The Education Trustee will focus particularly on the Trust’s educational operations, championing a positive, inclusive learning environment that supports students’ academic progress alongside their therapy and wellbeing needs. They will oversee and support Heads and staff in the development of Centre Development Plans and will monitor the personal and professional development of staff across the Trust.

Working collaboratively with the other Board members, they will help ensure that the Trust operates smoothly, efficiently, and effectively, and remains fully compliant with its legal obligations and responsibilities, always acting in accordance with Red Balloon’s values.

About Us

Red Balloon Educational Trust (RBET) is a UK charity that provides an alternative provision to young people studying at KS3-4 unable to attend mainstream school due to bullying, mental health issues, trauma or neurodivergence. We provide tailored educational, wellbeing and social re-engagement programmes both in physical Centres and as a blended online and in-person provision via Red Balloon of the Air.


The RBET Central Services team provides the underpinning strategic support and organisational development for the Red Balloon network, and works to open additional Centres in new locations.
