Your Role

Make a difference, learn new skills and build a rewarding career supporting young people in Exmouth.

Are you an experienced Residential Care Worker ready for a new challenge? Perhaps you have experience in education or another support role or you are looking to start your career in social care and would love the opportunity to learn British Sign Language (BSL).

We’re looking for Residential Care Workers to join our inspiring team, supporting young people aged 9–25 to develop their independence and achieve their potential. You’ll be based either in our new adult residential centre or in our on-site residential flats at the Academy, both just a couple of minutes’ walk from Exmouth beach.

If you’re passionate about making a difference to young people’s lives and want a role that’s varied, active and rewarding, we’d love to hear from you.

A role where every day is different:

You’ll be getting out and about, planning and organising social activities locally and further afield.

Every day as a Residential Care Worker is different. You’ll support our young people who live in our Academy Residential Home to develop their independent living skills, as well as organising social activities, for example activities in the local community, trips to the beach, cinema or bowling, and trips further afield.

We’ll invest in your development:

Working at the Deaf Academy is more than just a job. You’ll be joining an award-winning organisation with a unique culture, where the development of our students and employees is at the heart of what we do. Our teams create a positive, stimulating environment where children and young people can thrive, and where you can grow too.

We’ll provide full training, including British Sign Language (BSL) training, and sponsor you to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare. Already qualified at Level 3? Fantastic. If your experience comes from education or another support role, that’s valuable too. We’ll support you to develop the skills and qualifications you need to grow into the role and progress your career.

We’re looking for extraordinary people to join us, help inspire the next generation and shape our future. Along the way, you’ll have access to fantastic benefits, invaluable training and opportunities to develop your career.

Your shift pattern:

Our students spend their day in our School or College, with some also doing work placements or qualifications elsewhere, after which they return to our residential care flats. The shift pattern for this role is therefore outside of ‘school hours’.

There are 2 teams that you may be placed in, each team works 42 hours per week, details of which can be discussed further at interview:

  1. 2 teams that share a 2-week rota including weekends (working some evenings including sleep-ins, and 1 in every 2 weekends during the term)
  2. a team that work Monday to Friday across morning and afternoon/evening hours.

Take a look at our dedicated recruitment site for further details, staff stories and how to apply: Residential care workers - the Deaf Academy

  2. Weekly staff CPD and development sessions
  3. Work in a large team of supportive Residential Care Workers
  4. Fully funded BSL training and in‑house lessons
  5. A collaborative, inclusive and inspiring culture
  6. Progression opportunities and specialist training
  7. A beautiful coastal location close to the beach
  8. 15% discount on LED membership

*This position is working during the academy's term time, plus an additional 5 training days. The minimum salary for this role with no sleep-in rate applied is £25,692pa (this would apply to those only working the Mon-Fri shift pattern). The salary including sleep-ins may be up to £29,872pa (this includes payment for the maximum amount of sleep-ins possible for those working on full shift pattern), or £32,123 pa for those at top of the pay scale.

We have a number of roles available, we will therefore be shortlisting applications on a rolling basis. The Academy may close or amend the advert before the closing date.
