The Burrow @ Abbeyfield
About Us
Aims & Ethos
The Burrow is an alternative provision for primary-age pupils based at Abbeyfield Primary Academy and has been delivering alternative provision for permanently excluded pupils since November 2024. Admission is via referrals from the Local Authority Inclusion Team.
Underpinned by nurture principles and trauma-informed practice, the Burrow provides a dynamic learning environment that feels different from a traditional school environment whilst still maintaining predictable daily routines, consistent behavioural expectations and a focus on academic outcomes to support successful mainstream reintegration.
Curriculum
The Burrow provides a structured, nurturing environment where pupils access the national curriculum with a strong focus on foundational skills in reading and maths. Core subjects are taught by a qualified teacher through delivery of dynamic, practical, creative and personalised lessons adapted to meet the needs and interests of individual pupils. Alongside core subjects, pupils also engage with forest school, cooking and technology, PE and art lessons and access targeted intervention to promote their social and emotional development.
What the Burrow pupils say
“Adults at the Burrow are great. They make me happy.”
“Learning at the Burrow is good, I get help.”
Staffing
The Burrow offers a highly supportive environment with a staff-to-pupil ratio of 1:2, ensuring every child receives the attention they need to thrive.
This is a teacher-led provision, guided by two qualified and experienced teachers—one of whom is an Assistant Headteacher. Our teachers lead the way in delivering high-quality support for every learner. Guided by expertise and a deep understanding of individual needs, our teaching staff design and oversee all aspects of provision to ensure it is purposeful, inclusive, and impactful.
Teachers work collaboratively with specialist teams and families to create tailored strategies that help every child thrive. By placing teachers at the heart of provision, we guarantee that support is fully integrated into classroom practice and aligned with the curriculum, fostering progress and confidence for all pupils.
What the parents say
“Thank you all for supporting [my child] and being a part of his journey you have made a difference – by far some of the most understanding teachers he’s ever had! … You have shown him empathy and compassion when he’s struggled and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.”
