The Gateway Primary Free School is part of the Gateway Learning Community [GLC] which is a partnership of one secondary academy and four primary academies located within Tilbury and Chadwell St Mary in the borough of Thurrock, to the east of London. We are a vibrant, innovative and highly successful organisation: the place of choice to work and learn. Across the 5 academies of the GLC, we celebrate differences and pledge that everyone enjoys an equality of opportunity and is not discriminated against in any way.
As an Inclusion Advocate, you will work at the heart of our school to identify and support the individual needs of our most vulnerable pupils, including students with SEND, through a collaborative approach with senior leaders and teaching staff. You will work closely with the Inclusion Lead and SENDCo to ensure consistency in support strategies for our learners. You will act as a bridge between teaching staff, parents, and pupils, providing the practical and emotional support necessary for students to hit their academic targets and develop lifelong independence.
Key Responsibilities
- Targeted Support: Model inclusive strategies and 'scaffolding' for classroom teachers to help vulnerable pupils remain engaged within the classroom learning environment. Deliver learning activities to small groups and individuals, adjusting tasks to meet specific learning outcomes. Provide pre and post assessment on small group work to ensure progress is evident for each pupil.
- Collaborative Planning: Work with teachers to assist in developing Pastoral Support Plans and Regulation Plans.
- Mentorship: Maintain daily contact with assigned pupils to encourage positive attitudes, self-regulation, social skills and self-reliance. As well as supporting students through periods of change: transitions within school, secondary school transitions and individual life changes and circumstances.
- Early intervention: Representing ‘the voice of the child’ when working collaboratively with colleagues to identify and support students and families in need, identifying barriers and strategies for support through “Solution Circle” and Team Around a Family meetings.
- De-escalation: supporting children who are in a heightened-state of arousal through co-regulation.
- Conflict resolution: supporting key pupils in developing the skills required to resolve conflict and build social skills through appropriate interventions including: Circle of Friends, Restorative Conversations, pupil contracts.
- Record keeping: Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely records of pastoral concerns and interventions using the school’s safeguarding/tracking software (CPOMS).
- Partnership: Engage effectively with families and external practitioners to deliver holistic support for children. Working with families to overcome barriers to attendance and supporting 'soft starts' for school-avoidant pupils. Work with external practitioners such as Education Psychologists SEMH outreach, to develop support strategies to use within the school environment.
We are looking for a candidate who possesses:
- Experience: Previous experience working within a primary school setting and have previously supported learners with SEND, particularly those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Qualifications: GCSEs/O-Levels and a relevant Level 2 qualification (Level 3 is desirable).
- Skills: A clear understanding of how to provide outstanding learning support, manage behaviour effectively, and use ICT effectively. As well as the ability to be flexible and adapt to meet the needs presenting at any one time.
- Knowledge: A thorough understanding of Child Protection and Safeguarding legislation, SEND Code of Practice and trauma informed practice..
- Qualities: High-level communication skills, including active listening, and the ability to inspire and motivate others
