Your Role

Contract: Zero-hours contract

Working hours: Casual, as required during examination periods

The Arthur Terry School is seeking to appoint reliable, flexible and supportive individuals to join our team as Exam Scribes / Readers.

The successful candidates will provide support to students who are entitled to access arrangements during internal and external examinations. This may involve reading examination questions aloud, acting as a scribe by accurately recording students' dictated answers, or providing both forms of support, depending on individual requirements.

This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is patient, approachable and able to help students feel comfortable and confident during their examinations.

As this is a zero-hours contract, work will be offered on a casual basis in line with examination timetables and the needs of the school.

Key responsibilities

  1. Read examination questions and instructions clearly and accurately to students where required.
  2. Act as a scribe, recording students' dictated answers accurately and without interpretation.
  3. Follow examination regulations and access arrangement guidelines at all times.
  4. Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when working with students.
  5. Provide calm, reassuring and impartial support throughout examinations.
  6. Attend any necessary training or briefings ahead of examination periods.

The ideal candidate will:

  1. Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Be patient, approachable and supportive.
  3. Have good attention to detail and accurate spelling and written skills.
  4. Be reliable, punctual and flexible.
  5. Be able to follow instructions and maintain confidentiality.
  6. Have the ability to work calmly and professionally in an examination environment.

Previous experience working with young people or supporting students with additional needs would be advantageous, although not essential, as training will be provided.

What we can offer

  1. The opportunity to make a positive difference to students' examination experiences.
  2. A supportive and welcoming school team.
  3. Opportunities for professional development and continued learning.
  4. Access to an Employee Assistance Programme and employee benefits.
  5. Membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), subject to eligibility.
  6. A commitment to staff wellbeing and opportunities to support your professional growth.

How to apply

  1. Please complete the online application form and include a supporting statement outlining what skills and experience you have that make you suitable for the role.
